Nirvana's third and final studio album, In Utero, was released in September 1993. The album was intended to diverge significantly from the polished production of its previous album, Nevermind. in order to capture a more abrasive and natural sound, the group hired engineer Steve Albini to record In Utero was recorded quickly with few studio embellishments over a two week period. The song lyrics and album packaging incorporated medical imagery that conveyed Kurt Cobain's outlook on his band's newfound fame, and his publicized personal life.
Soon after recording was completed, rumors circulated it may not be released in its original state, since the record label felt that the result was not commercially viable.
Upon release, In Utero entered the Billboard 200 chart at number one and received critical acclaim. In Utero has sold over 15 million copies worldwide.
