Janis Joplin was an American singer-songwriter who rose to stardom during the late 60s as the singer for a psychedelic-acid rock band named Big Brother and the Holding Company. She later gained fame as a solo artist with backing groups. She was one of the major attractions to the Woodstock festival and the Festival Express train tour. Her most popular songs from her career include "Ball 'n' Chain","Down on Me", "Piece of My Heart" "Summertime", "Maybe", "To Love Somebody", "Kozmic Blues", "Work Me, Lord", "Cry Baby", "Mercedes Benz", and her number one hit, "Me and Bobby McGee". Joplin was well known for her performances, of which her fans referred to as "electric". She was known at the height of her career as "The Queen of Rock and Roll" and "The Queen of Psychedelic Soul,". Rolling Stone ranked Joplin #46 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and #28 on its list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. In 1995, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
