The American heavy metal band Pantera from Arlington, Texas was formed in 1981 by the Abbott brothers, guitarist Dimebag Darrell, drummer Vinnie Paul, and vocalist Terry Glaze. Bassist Rex Brown joined the band in the following year, replacing bass guitarist Tommy D. Bradford. Pantera started as a glam metal band, releasing four albums during the 80s. Looking for a heavier sound, Pantera replaced Glaze with Phil Anselmo in 87. Its fifth album, 1990's Cowboys from Hell, Pantera switched to a groove metal sound. The sixth album, 1992's Vulgar Display of Power, exhibited an even heavier sound. Due to tensions, Great Southern Trendkill (1996) was recorded separately. Pantera only produced one studio album in the next seven years, Reinventing the Steel (2000). Pantera went on hiatus in 2001, and was disbanded in 2003. On December 8, 2004, Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage by a deranged fan during a Damageplan concert ending hopes of a reunion.
