Pearl Jam's song "Alive" was the band's first single, it appearing 1991 on the band's debut album, Ten. Written by Stone Gossard (guitarist). "Alive" was originally called "Dollar Short", and was an instrumental included on a demo tape circulated to find a singer for the group. Eddie Vedder (Vocalist) obtained a copy of the tape and wrote lyrics Describing a semi fictionalized account of the time when he was told his father was not actually his biological parent.

Pear Jam's August 1991 released album "Ten" though not immediately successful, by late 1992 had reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart. The album produced three hit singles: "Even Flow", "Alive", and "Jeremy". Ten was instrumental in popularizing alternative rock in the mainstream. By February of 2013, the album had exceeded 10 million sales. It has been certified 13x platinum by RIAA, and remains Pearl Jam's most commercially successful album to date.
